I have used the boiling method in the past without long term success results it’s definitely not for a high quality Euro mount.
I also used Dermestid beetles in the last few years with great success but my turn around time was far too long.
Maceration is tremendously efficient at removing anything around and inside the skull that isn't bone.
All meat, cartilage and fat are completely consumed by the bacterias leaving behind a prestine trophy with even the smallest and most delicate bones completely intact.
The use of maceration is optimal in leaving the notoriously fragile bones unscathed and where they belong.
Every single centimeter of your mount will be immaculate, giving you something you will be proud to display for years to come.
This is greatly superior to boiling, which is known for driving the grease into the bones, giving them an off-white, yellowish tint over time.
Boiling also comes with a risk, if overdone, the skull can crack and even fall apart.
It should also be noted that boiling does NOT remove the meat entirely, other tools are required to complete the process, drastically increasing the odds of damaging the more fragile areas of the skull.
A Euro mount takes up a lot less space than a shoulder mount , and can even be maneuvered and displayed to your heart's content, allowing you to fully appreciate it from any angle or height. Shoulder mounts are also much more expensive, and cost up to three to five times as much as a Euro mount.
European mounts have gained a staggering amount of popularity since the turn of the millenium, and the reason for it is simple.
When done right, they are beautifull, and they are timeless.
The degreasing step is the most important one in the skull cleaning process. Without it done thoroughly, a beautiful end result would not last more than a year and the grease would simply start seeping out of the bones slowly making your skull look yellow, sticky and even sometimes smelly.
“The picture above shows a completely macerated skull before the degreasing process.”
After years of degreasing with soap or ammonia in warm water for months to get done properly, I finally got my own “secret” 😉 degreasing method polished up!
It use to take me 3 to 6 months to have a deer skull completely degreased. It worked no doubt about it but it just took too long and I understand that you all want your trophy on the wall sooner than later.
In the last year, I have worked tirelessly with the aid of a chemist who also dabble in taxidermy and we came up with a perfect and safe way to remove the grease out of the bones in a much faster way and believe me when I say the end results are nothing short of amazing, the skulls turn out grease FREE and smooth to the touch.
